The new camera’s much higher resolution is designed to give filmmakers more flexibility in production and framing/capturing images at the highest possible detail, even when creating a 4K or 6K production. Regardless, don’t expect to see a 12K TV any time soon. The camera will start shipping “in a couple of weeks’ time,” Petty said, though the company will focus on seeding the 12K with cinematographers and other high-end users first, to see what they come up with in using it in various production settings.
